It's not about the money with Garrett ... promise
Allegedly, current Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is in Dallas about to meet with owner Jerry Jones about his future.Tuesday he was in Baltimore where he was offered a job.
Wednesday he was in Atlanta where he was probably offered a job.
Today he's in Dallas trying to be convinced to keep his job.
And we're told that it's not about the cash for Garrett? Yeah, right. It's all about the cash at this point. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt: two weeks ago he wanted the best position. Today, he's wants the best position for the best price.
By the way, Baltimore's pissed that he didn't accept right away, as if Baltimore is the greatest franchise ever.
Editor's note: Turns out, Garrett is staying in Dallas.
Baltimore Ravens
At first mention I wondered why Garrett would ever want to go to Baltimore. They finished 3-13 and, again, are pathetic on offense, which is kind of why they're going after him in the first place. But after looking at things, it's not the worse situation in the world.
For one, the defense is not as great as it was, but it's not bad. There is not a lot there to fix. Secondly, the Ravens have one of the best young running backs in the league (Willis McGahee), a solid receiver (Derrick Mason) and a Jason Witten-esque tight end on a team with no one to get him the ball (Todd Heap). Their offensive line is good.
But it's the quarterback that's the clincher. Troy Smith was admirable filling in late, but is he the future? Can Steve McNair come back enough for the Ravens to draft a young guy to groom for three years down the road? Baltimore's bad, but it's not the worst situation.
Atlanta Falcons
Then there's the Falcons. They're just bad. The once-great defense is mediocre, torn apart by injuries and free agency. Their once-great running game is ravaged by the aging and undersized Warrick Dunn and a solid young back-up in Jerious Norwood. Their receivers suck. Their quarterback situation is in the dregs.
Dallas Cowboys
Or, Garrett can stick around for a year, get paid $3 million a year, see what happens with Wade Phillips and takes over a great Cowboys team in 2009. This is not only a good team, but a deep team. If Flozell Adams leaves, it's OK because they drafted three dudes (Pat McQuistan, James Marten and Doug Free) to come in. Receivers are relatively set. Running back will be set soon when Barber is extended and they draft Felix Jones this year. The defense is set. All Garrett would need to do is be patient and then run with it.
