Believe

Believe
Got to admit, last week I did not believe in the Dallas Stars.

I don't feel too bad about it. About 99 percent of the bandwagon fans currently crowding into the American Airlines Center felt the same way.

I think the problem isn't about the Stars or the Detroit Red Wings. It's the problem with Dallas sports.

I can name three different teams that I knew would come out night in and night out and play their balls off: 1999 Stars, 2006 Mavericks and 2004 Rangers.

Now, those teams didn't necessarily mount the wins or championships. Certainly, the Stars won the Stanley Cup, the Mavs went to the Finals and the Rangers nearly made the playoffs. But of of the last 15 years, those are three teams that were really great to watch win or lose because they cared.

Name me a Cowboys team that looked like they wanted to win? Other than a handful of the Mavs teams, most have been lackluster (see: Antoine Walker). And the Stars, pardon the pun, have skated since making it to the Cup finals.

I'd like to put the 2007-08 Stars into the pantheon of great teams that play balls out every night.

I'm a believer 'til the season's over. Win or lose.

The Stars defied all odds Saturday and beat the Red Wings in Detroit. It's not only Marty Turco's first win at Joe Louis Arena, but it ensures game 6 in Dallas tonight.

Several things are happening. Turco's rounding out and keeping the Red Wings on their toes for 60 minutes. And the Joe Louis monkey is off his back. Also, Dave Tippett may get a lot of criticism for messing with the lines, but the Joel Lundqvist-Loui Eriksson-Toby Peterson line has been a brilliant move. Not only are they shutting down the Wings' top line, but they're putting offensive pressure on Chris Osgood.

Frankly, there's not a lot of bad happening with this team right now. And there's really no reason why the Stars should not win tonight and force a game 7. Once you get there, all bets are off.

Needless to say, the Wings did not want to come to Dallas for a sixth game. The American Airlines Center will be absolute bonkers.
