On the road
The road has not been kind to the Texas Rangers. Six games in and they've lost two straight series and are down 2-4 with three games left against the Oakland Athletics.
All due to a very disheartening and debilitating 10-8 loss in Chicago yesterday.
Teams like the Rangers can't afford to score eight runs and beat up on a pitching staff only to have your own staff spit it all back up. Eight runs should equal a win if things are going to continue on their current course. Also, four errors by the opponent should equal win. Lot of things went right for the Rangers and they couldn't pull it out.
Then there's Kevin Millwood. The Rangers have had worse free agent signings. Millwood has to be in the top 5 or 10, for sure.
For one, he's never been healthy since 2006. He's hurt again -- a busted groin. He was hurt all last season. Then there's the performances. He doesn't go long into games, every stat is worse than the year ago and even worse than the year before that.
This is the third year of a 4-year deal. Maybe he'll have a little trade value in the off-season or, if not, the Rangers can just have him eating innings until he lives out his contract.
Notes:
1. Chris Davis has 14 hits in his last 10 games raising his average to .278. Also, his strikeouts are down a bit -- five in seven games.
2. It's going to be game No. 162, and at that point will we realize how good Josh Rupe's been more often than not. He pitched them into the game after Millwood limped off with a bum groin.
3. I think Hank Blalock's slowly building trade value. He could very well be gone in a week.
4. With four steals last night, the Rangers are on the verge of overtaking their standard over the last decade.
5. Can you fathom Frank Catalanotto stealing 15 bases in 2001.
6. Warner Madrigal recorded six outs -- five by strikeout.
