Vlad the free agent

Vlad the inhaler
As the saying goes, "If you can't beat them, join them."

Or sign them in free agency.

The Rangers are looking for a right-handed bat for their line-up and Vladimir Guerrero, the legendary all-time Rangers killer, is looking for a gig.

So, why not?

Vlad is 34 and if you've watched baseball the last three or so years, you know that he's lost a step or two. He doesn't steal bases as much, his range in the outfield ain't what it used to be and his power numbers have dwindled.

However, he's far from being taken behind the shed and shot. He hit .295 last season with 15 homers nad 50 RBI in just 383 at-bats. He is bitchingly consistent not hitting below .300 his entire career (except his first year when he got 27 at-bats).

Most importantly, he carries the innate ability to not strike out (his career high for a season was 11 years ago at 95 Ks) and although he doesn't walk a lot (between 50-70 in 500 at-bats), his OBP flirts with .400 every season.

However, I need a favor: Close your eyes, think about September against the Angels or A's. Runner in scoring position, two outs in a one-run game. Who would you rather see? Milton Bradley, Vlad or Marlon Byrd?

I'd take Vlad, too. A great signing if the Rangers can pull it off.
